Introduction: Hotel du Lac

Every year I used to go out to Switzerland to the Montreux Television Festival. At the time I was working with the BBC on a couple of pilot sitcoms which, sadly, never saw the light of day. But it was always a lovely week and the area around Montreux, set on the edge of Lake Geneva, is so very beautiful. I adore it there and the air is so sharp and clean it’s as if there’s an extra molecule in the atmosphere. Fabulous.

The last time I went, my partner, Lovely Kev, and I had just met, but I was already Very Keen! Strangely, when you’re not looking for love, it always seems to find you and a French television producer at the conference took a great shine to me. Every day he would wait for me to arrive and give me a small gift: a rose, some chocolate. Every day, he’d ask could he take me to dinner. Every day, I declined. The more I rebuffed his offers, the more he pursued.

Every night I returned to the hotel I was staying in – somewhere much more budget-conscious than the beautiful Eden Palace au Lac – and phoned Kev who was staying at a hotel in Belgium with his work. Sometimes it was four in the morning after a surfeit of BBC hospitality – I think I had my licence fee’s worth of champagne that year. But we’d talk and talk until I fell asleep. Unlike the indifferent lover of my story, Lovely Kev sent red roses to my hotel and didn’t flinch too much at the three hundred and fifty quid phone bill that our late night, slightly slurry, calls racked up. Mine was similarly ruinous. Yikes. But I think then that we both knew that it was true love!
